It’s all about friendship.

I had a really good evening last night, and it reminded me about the importance of decent communities for any technology innovator, social networker, or internet publisher.

I’d watched all my friends playing Rainbow Six: Vegas on Xbox Live for the past month or so, but hadn’t had any time or cash available. It was only when I received it as a Valentine’s Day present (What a girlfriend!), that i was able to rejoin my best online mates.

And it was a little strange, after a month or two of enforced separation. But within minutes we were laughing and joking as we shot terrorists, and got killed ourselves.

The more you can encourage users to feel like your technology enables them to hang out and have fun with their friends, the better response you’ll get. Make it simple, intuitive, and friendly. And above all, make it work. That’s why I’m an Xbox fan boy, not a PC gaming fan boy.

Firefox and Vista in one post?

I’ve been a little distracted by the arrival of a new PC at work. So I now have two PCs, and three monitors on my desk! All with a rather lovely view of Seattle to remind me of the time I spent there.

Anyhoo. If you’re a keen user of Firefox, and you’re also a user of Vista, then why not get involved in the Mozilla testing process? You can find out more, here. The test day itself has passed, but you can still join in. I would, but all my work PCs are locked onto Win XP for the foreseeable future…

And in other news, I’m sure most people have now heard of Yahoo Pipes. Kudos to Yahoo for releasing the tool for creating, merging and splicing all kinds of feeds, and with an interesting graphical interface. I’ve been receiving emails from several people telling me how great it is.
Trouble is, it’s not quite user friendly yet. As zdnet pointed out.

No more MSN connectivity for IMified

I wrote in a previous post about IMified, and how useful it is for someone like me. I’m permanently connected to MSN Messenger to contact colleagues and clients throughout the day, and friends throughout the evening.

IMified offered a way to integrate lots of applications with my IM client. But, as GigaOm reports, it appears the service will no longer work with MSN Messenger, due to the limit of members that Imified can connect to. Only the first lucky 1000 people were able to get access via MSN, and there doesn’t seem to be any hopeful hint of a solution in the future.

Guess which IM client I use at work? Yep, MSN. Imified have suggested on their blog that disappointed users should email MSN at bizdesk@microsoft.com.

Web 2.0 in one brilliant video

Occasionally you see someone using video in a way which counterbalances hours of lip-synch clips and people hurting themselves in comedic ways.
I know this clip has been around for a little while, but it’s definitely worth watching. Particularly if you ever need to explain the concept of Web 2.0 in a presentation, or without using buzz words.
