Excellent post, and you bring some important insights to light regarding the changing motives of bloggers and the market conditions that have prompted some of those changes such as increased competition, oversaturation, and the ability to propagate your message to the masses. My main criteria when determining if a blog is 'quality' is if it made me think. Even if I don't necessarily agree with the author's stance, if it offered a clear point of view, and shared something it's worth a read. You can tell when a blogger is personally invested in their content vs. just trying to slap up a post for fame or 'fortune,' but if you are trying to get rich blogging, a) you miss the point, b) you rob your readers and c) you contribute to the decline of the web community. The fact is that there are thousands upon thousands of excellent blogs out there, harnessing the technology to forward thinking and advance knowldge, but at the heart of it, it's about sharing. And if those are your motives, I say 'blog on and prosper!'

I have seen a few blogs which have gone so far as to create a No Ads banner to show how virtuous they are-which has to be at least as bad as bragging about how many Twitter followers you have.

I have blogged both for money and for the joy of the craft of writing and I must admit that I don't make that much money and still enjoy the writing. So why bother with the ads and such? Well, why not? Ten bucks is ten bucks.

I am as mad about my stats as any other blogger, and I know a few who study each visitor and track them back a couple of pages to see where they came from. These are blogs with twenty hits a day. I just love the raw numbers.

Anyway, good post-
