The strange case of the hitchiking slug…

Dan Thornton | July 15, 2008

This is a personal post, rather than a social media marketing message, but it was just too weird not to share. Plus it bemused several fellow cat owners on Twitter, and didn’t return much information in a hectic bit of google searching last night….

A slug, by Marj Joly on Flickr

So last night, at about 11.30pm, our very fluffy black cat wandered in as I was doing some work on the laptop (I think it was my Am I Evil? post). Taking a quick look at him, and removing some stray foliage he’d picked up, I noticed something weird in his tail, and wasn’t sure whether it was a growth or something equally icky caught in his fur. He didn’t seem in pain, and was acting normally. I knew what it looked like, but it seemed hard to believe, especially as the cat-owning Twitter people I asked reacted with disbelief, and a google search only turned up a couple of mentions of this happening.

But it turns out that it was a slug caught in the cat’s tail! Bearing in mind that slugs apparently have teeth and are omnivores, I checked it wasn’t attached to the actual cat before carefully cutting away the fur around it and removing it! Not particularly pleasant, especially for my other half, who was feeling decidely queasy.

So there you go….slugs can get caught in the fur of cats, and end up tangled up quite happily. And when you put them down for a couple of seconds on the floor to stand up, they also start moving just to make your partner scream!

And if you’re wondering what Hizzy the cat looks like:

My step-cat is an indoor / outdoor cat and if

Maureen McCabe | July 15, 2008

My step-cat is an indoor / outdoor cat and if it rains and he is outside he sometimes hides under the hostas. Slugs love hostas. I have never seen a slug hitchhiking on him but I know it would make me squirm…
