Currently, for new bands/artists it&#039;s the web - back in the day it was out of the back of a van or an indie network ie the Cartel or suchlike, major deal if you were lucky and self pressing short runs, as became the way during acid house times. In early punk days if you lived in the provinces John Peel was literally the ONLY channel for hearing the new music.
Having the backing of &#039;something&#039; with some money (record co or otherwise) makes the funding of those limited editions and merchandise for the &#039;1000&#039; easier for bands. its ok for the likes of radiohead et al do crow about bucking the system - they built their success and money on the back of the traditional industry.
