Climate change and Blog Action Day

October 15th, 2009 · View Comments

Every year I’m interested, amazed and impressed by the worldwide effort for Blog Action Day.

This year, the theme is climate change, and there have been some really interesting posts.

And I could easily post about how you should be working on a recycled laptop which runs on compost. Or I could link to 20 solar powered gadgets to boost my Amazon earnings.

But staying true to what I believe, the way to tackle climate change for individuals isn’t down to punitive measures (For companies, I think more pressure is needed for a lot of them). For individuals, I’m a huge believer in both having inspiration and the whole Herd/Crowd theory.

Which is why the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen as a car-loving, motorcycle-riding, racer-wannabe petrol head was the 2009 Isle of Man TT when they held a completely green race.

I’m currently on public transport wifi, so can’t link direct to Youtube, but seriously, check out the green TT. And the fact cars are planned to join in 2010.

I firmly believe it’s about giving individuals the right choices for them, and not forcing the choices of a few on the many. Inspire people and they’ll be interested. I’ll probably never lose the love of two stroke motor when I attend a race, or the sound of a loud MotoGP fourstroke, despite the fact I recycle, use public transport, and in stereotypical dad mode, spend my life turning lights off.

But that’s me. I’d willingly spend anything to own an expensive V8, but offset every gallon of petrol by the actions I take elsewhere in life.

But every single one of you is different, and if we can’t apply our social media, behavourial targetting, global niche, monitored, research, inspected learnings to finding ways people want to tackle this shift, then we’re doomed.

And for the climate change nay-sayers – you’re entitled to your opinions, but you can’t deny that humanity has destroyed so much that we need to act now, whether it’s under the climate change banner, the conservation banner, or just the ‘no evil’ banner.

Once the deep mystery of “climate change” has been solved
And “What’s green and causes CC?” is no longer a popular riddle,
The legacy of the era most likely will be:
“Never in recorded history have so many made so much over so little”.
(With apologies to the late, great Winston Churchill).

As I said, it's not so much about climate change for me as it is about all of the environmental effects that we have on the planet. Even if the climate stays the same, we've still made, and are making, plenty of species extinct, for example…
