Disclosure Notice:
All views on this site are mine and mine alone, and do not represent the views of my employers past or present in any way.
Experience:
I spent almost a decade in print magazine and online publishing with Bauer Media (formerly Emap Automotive), in both editorial and marketing roles.
From January 2008 until April 2009, I was Community Marketing Manager across the Bauer Media portfolio, increasing community engagement on Bauer properties, and advising and implementing best practice for engaging with external blogs and social networks.
Prior to this, I spent seven years working mainly on the website for Motorcycle News (MCN). Having started as an Editorial Assistant, I was promoted to Reporter, Products Editor, and finally Web Producer, responsible for running the largest motorcycling website in the world and managing the online editorial team. During that time I also frequently contributed to the print edition of MCN.
I’ve also written on a freelance basis for magazines (Official Dreamcast Magazine), manufacturers (Dunlop), and websites (Eurogamer, Strategy Informer, Gamestyle). And I’ve been both Editor and Editor-in-Chief of online PDF magazine Disposable Media, until fatherhood came along!
Speaking Testimonials:
‘Dan Thornton provided a particularly insightful introduction to online communities at a recent ALPSP seminar. The detailed analysis of the available options for publishing in its varied forms provided an exciting launch pad for the day itself and provided food for thought for the many academic publishers attending the event.’
Nick Evans, Chief Operating Officer, Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers
‘‘Dan is incredibly knowledgeable about the social networks in all their myriad guises. He also has that rare ability to enthusiastically inform the uninitiated without ever being patronising’
Julian Thorne, Managing Director, Dovetail

Hey Dan – hope you are well? Thought you might be interested in tomorrow's issue of Grazia. Sarah
This week’s issue of Grazia will be a groundbreaking ‘Walk-in, Talking’ issue, harnessing the latest 3D technology and taking it to a new level.
The issue uses “Augmented Reality” (AR) and 3D motion graphics to bring Brit award-winner Florence Welch (from Florence and the Machine) to life. Grazia readers are able to use the cover to unlock Florence singing and dancing to her hit ‘You’ve Got The Love’ in a 3D virtual space.
The ‘3D Walk-In, Talking Grazia’ comes to life by holding up AR codes published throughout the magazine to a webcam or iPhone.
Check out http://www.graziadaily.co.uk/3D from Tuesday 23rd March for a complete guide to getting the most out of this ‘3D Walk-In, Talking’ Grazia.
The weekly fashion glossy teamed up with AR experts and interactive creative agency Wardenclyffe to create this very special issue on sale tomorrow – 23 March 2010.
In addition to Florence on the cover, the issue will showcase a number of other interactive editorial and commercial experiences.
