Social Media Marketing resources

My collection of the marketing resources I consider valuable, or even essential for effective marketing. If it’s recommended here, I’ve read it, used it, and have no hesitation in recommending it to others. What I’ll also try and do is list the most important to me at the top of each section, so the first two or three titles are the best places to start in each category.

Books:

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell: There’s been some debate about whether the people types described in The Tipping Point are the only mechanisms to unleash an idea or product as an epidemic – but not that using those techniques will drive things further and faster than without. (The Tipping Point blog)
The Long Tail by Chris Anderson: The explanation of the online economy, which shows exactly how and why things have changed. (The Long Tail blog)
Wikinomics by Don Tapscott: The principals and examples of the new methods of collaboration in business and industry. (The Wikinomics blog)
Join The Conversation by Joseph Jaffe: Looking at methods of using social media marketing with a rare acknowledgment of the pressures of doing it in a corporate environment with a requirement for measures, metrics and return on investment. (The Joseph Jaffe blog)
Unleashing the Ideavirus by Seth Godin: Companion to The Tipping Point which looks at how to spread ideas both within a company, and externally. (Seth Godin’s blog)
Don’t Make Me Think by Steve Krug: A quick, simple and easy way to grasp the principles of web usability to allow insights into web design without annoying web designers and developers.
Tribes by Seth Godin. Probably his best work yet to inspire radical change within business and management, and to solidify the idea of tribes forming around areas of interest. (Seth Godin’s blog)
Business Stripped Bare: Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur by Richard Branson. If you’re familiar with the Virgin name, but not the reasons for it’s success in 8 billion dollar companies and around 300 separate business operations, then this is worthwhile reading – especially as a living, breathing, hugely successful case study of many social media best practices from a company with 30 years of history.

eBooks:

Twitter: A great guide to Twitter which is comprehensive, informative and well written by Luke Razzell with plenty of examples and case studies.

Groups and Organisations:

Social Media Club

Social Media Mafia

Word of Mouth Marketing Association
